Fire prevention measures

23 July 2023

- Do not keep materials such as salai, lighter where children can find them.
- When cooking in the kitchen, do not leave the kitchen while the gas or fire is burning.
- Keep the gas cylinder outside the kitchen as much as possible.
- Check the cylinder pipe, cylinder from time to time, if you find any damage or breakage, get it repaired immediately.
- After cooking, close the gas regulator and clean the gas cylinder and pipes from time to time.
- Before bringing the gas cylinder home, do not bring unsealed, underweight, smelly (suspect of leaking) cylinders.
- Regularly check whether electrical appliances in the house are in good condition, repair and change bare tar, broken switches, extension cords.
- Do not use the extension cord with many appliances that consume a lot of electricity (iron, heater, refrigerator, microwave oven, motor) and other appliances at the same time.
- Never use electrical equipment by plugging the bare wire directly into the socket instead of the 2 pin switch.
- When not in use, unplug the electrical equipment from the socket and keep it aside.
- Turn off all electrical appliances at night or when you leave the house and go out. (This not only protects you from fire but also helps to reduce electricity consumption.)
- Do not light a fire in an open place when the wind is blowing.
- Do not store petrol, diesel, kerosene at home. (Prevent children from accessing such content)
- If flammable substances are to be kept in the house, keep them in a separate, suitable container with a well-sealed lid, where the source of fire cannot be reached easily.
- Children cannot assess risk, they can imitate adults and use fire while playing. Do not leave children alone at home.
- Maintain cleanliness in and around the house
- Do not leave your house or shed empty, ask your neighbors or relatives to take care of you if you have to leave for a while.
- Do not smoke inside the room and do not throw cigarette butts randomly.
Emergency Fire Preparedness
- Save the number 101 of Varun Yantra (Fire Extinguisher) in your mobile phone or home telephone contact list.
- Do not use the water tank in the house until it is completely empty, save some water for emergencies.
- Keep a fire blanket (in the kitchen), a fire extinguisher at home.
- Always keep a flashlight ready in the room.

- Do not make fires and smoke cigarettes in the forest area.
What to do if there is a fire?
- If you see a fire incident, immediately inform other people in the vicinity and ask for help in control.
- Try to find out how the fire started. (electrical or other fire)
- Consider the size of the fire, if the fire is likely to spread and if the fire is not under your control, immediately notify the fire department.
- If there is a suspicion of an electrical fire, immediately turn off the main switch in the house.
- If there is a normal small fire other than electrical, try to extinguish it with water.
- If the fire is inside the room and it is not possible to control it, close the door of the room. (It does not allow the fire to spread easily)
- Do not allow anyone except fire fighters to enter the place of fire.
- Do not risk your life and try to remove goods from the place of fire.
- Send some helpers to the main square near the place of fire to guide the Varuna Yantra.
- If you can save some material from the fire, take it out and keep it in a safe place.
Fire extinguishers and fire blankets, which are available in the market easily and at a reasonable price, can be kept in individual houses and offices for safety, which can control the fire at the beginning of the fire and prevent further damage to people and property.
